Bristol Township to Receive $11 Million to Make Sewage Treatment Plant Improvements

(HARRISBURG) -- Bristol Township will receive $11 million in state grants and loans to upgrade its 46-year old sewage treatment plant, according to Senator Tommy Tomlinson (R-Bucks). The Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority (PENNVEST) approved the low-interest loan at its board meeting today.

Tomlinson said the Township will receive $9 million in low-interest PENNVEST loans and $2 million in Commonwealth Finance Authority H20 grants to complete the project.

Tomlinson and Rep. Tony Melio worked closely with the Township and the Board to obtain funding for the much-needed improvements, which are important to protecting public health, the environment and encouraging economic development.

The money will be used to make major repairs to the sewage treatment plant, which was originally built in 1963.   This includes digester improvements, replacement of pumps, controls, disinfection system, effluent flow meter, valves, grit screw and installation of automatic controls for sludge removal

"This PENNVEST financing will help to eliminate health hazards associated with inadequately treated waste due to organic and hydraulic overloads at the sewage plant," Tomlinson said.  "The project will also prevent the discharge of raw or insufficiently treated waste to the Delaware River and Neshaminy Creek. "

Tomlinson added that the improvements will bring the township into compliance with Department of Environmental Protection regulations in an effort to lift the current moratorium.  The moratorium has prevented several retail businesses and two industrial parks from expanding.

"Increasing capacity will ensure that businesses can locate and expand here, bringing new jobs and opportunities with them," Tomlinson said.  "This project is critical to public safety, a cleaner environment and economic development.  I’m very pleased we were able to obtain the funding necessary to get it done."
