Tomlinson Supports Extended UC Benefits for PA Workers(HARRISBURG) - - Senator Tommy Tomlinson (R-Bucks) today voted for a bill that would provide for extended unemployment compensation benefits for Pennsylvania residents, saying the measure is crucial to helping tens of thousands of people who have lost their jobs as a result of the economic downturn. The Senate today unanimously approved House Bill 1770, which is expected to be signed by the Governor. It provides for an additional seven weeks of compensation for the unemployed whose benefits have expired. The additional weeks of unemployment compensation will be mostly funded through federal stimulus dollars. While the federal law provides that the benefits will be cost neutral for businesses in the Commonwealth, Senator Tomlinson said there will be a cost for the state and for municipal governments. "Through a quirk in the federal law, local governments that have laid off workers will be responsible for paying into the unemployment compensation system to cover those costs," said Senator Tomlinson. "However, the municipalities that are impacted do not oppose this measure because it will help to bring money back into their local economies and help families who are struggling." Tomlinson added that the job market is not expected to improve dramatically over the next year, and many unemployed workers have exhausted benefits despite the fact that they have been searching for employment. "These are very difficult times, and we need to do everything we can to help those who have been hit hard by this severe recession," Tomlinson said. "These additional benefits will help Pennsylvania families put food on the table while they continue to find work. It is a very important boost at a time when we need it the most."
