Senator Tomlinson Urges Homeowners, Businesses to Consider Flood Insurance

HARRISBURG – As spring approaches, Sen. Tommy Tomlinson (R-Bucks) is urging homeowners and business owners to avoid costly flood repairs by taking part in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).

"The NFIP program is backed by the federal government and is available to homeowners, renters, and business owners. Most homeowner insurance policies do not cover flood damage, so flood insurance provides a valuable layer of protection for homeowners," Tomlinson said.

He said Pennsylvania has experienced 15 federally declared flood disasters since 1997. Since 2002, insured flood losses in the state have totaled more than $337 million.

Through the NFIP, Insurance is available for flood damage up to $250,000 for a residence and $100,000 for its contents. The average premium costs around $500 a year, but the insurance can cost as little as $112 a year depending on the level of flood risk in the area.

There is usually a 30-day waiting period for the coverage to take effect, so businesses and homeowners should consider the program as soon as possible, Tomlinson said.

"Our area has been hit hard by flooding in past years, so homeowners and business owners in flood prone areas may want to ensure that they are covered," Tomlinson said.  "For a small amount of money, this program provides a great deal of coverage, and peace of mind."

Flood insurance can be purchased from private insurers and agents. For more information on the NFIP or to find a local agent, homeowners can visit www.floodsmart.gov or call 1-800-427-2419.
