Senate Panel Approves Tomlinson Bill to Extend Property Tax Exemptions for Disabled VeteransHARRISBURG – The Senate Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee approved legislation yesterday that would extend the property tax exemption program available to disabled veterans, according to the bill's sponsor Sen. Tommy Tomlinson (R-Bucks). "The current property tax exemption program helps a number of disabled veterans, but there are many more veterans who need and deserve our help," Tomlinson said. "My legislation will extend property tax exemptions to more brave Pennsylvanians who were disabled in the course of serving their nation." Under existing law, a veteran with a total permanent disability sustained as a result of military service could apply for exemption from paying property taxes if they demonstrated financial need. The need for the exemption is determined by the State Veteran's Commission. To help make the exemption available to more veterans, Tomlinson's legislation would establish guidelines for determining need. Under Senate Bill 19, eligible applicants can earn up to $75,000 and still be eligible for property tax exemption. The bill will also extend eligibility to disabled veterans who own their home with his or her spouse. Under current law, a disabled veteran would only be eligible if he or she was the sole owner of the property. The bill will also extend the time to renew the exemption from two years to five years. Senate Bill 19 will now move to the full Senate for consideration. CONTACT: Fran Cleaver |
